Developing Nucleus for Awards Entry and Judging – Case Studies

Nucleus was born from necessity — a response to the limitations of BAFTA’s third-party awards entry system, which by 2012 had become unfit for purpose. As Product Manager, I led the development of a brand-new platform from the ground up: one that could handle the complexity, scale, and diversity of BAFTA’s awards ecosystem while delivering a flexible, intuitive experience for entrants, jurors, and administrators alike.

We began by capturing requirements from across BAFTA’s seven annual ceremonies and developing a custom architecture that could adapt to everything from simple one-off entries to multi-user organisation accounts. Every feature was designed for configurability, allowing workflows to be tailored by award, user type, or submission format. Entry forms became fully dynamic, submission PDFs were automated, and complex payments, including self-invoicing, were built into the system from the start.

What started as an awards entry tool quickly evolved into the backbone of BAFTA Media Technology’s digital infrastructure. Over the years, Nucleus has been adopted by external clients, powering a wide range of submission, nomination, and membership processes. With over 430,000 entries processed to date and new features delivered year on year, from automation and reporting to platform integrations like Jury Voting and BAFTA View, Nucleus remains our flagship product and a benchmark in digital awards management.

Interesting in working together?

I work with organisations to streamline workflows, modernise tools, and deliver systems that save time and enable teams to focus on the work that matters. If you’re planning a project or refining a platform, get in touch. I’d be happy to talk through how I can help.
