Launching a Secure VOD Platform for Awards Viewing – Case Study
In 2021, BAFTA set out to transform its screeners delivery process moving away from costly and environmentally unsustainable DVD distribution to a modern, secure, and scalable video-on-demand platform. As Product Manager, I led the creation of BAFTA View: a cross-award, multi-device VOD platform built with accessibility, security and performance at its core.
BAFTA View replaced fragmented workflows with a single, unified experience for voting members across Film, Games, and Television. It integrates deeply with Nucleus (entry metadata), Salesforce (SSO), and the BAFTA Voting Site, and it uses ScreenerHub as middleware to surface content securely from external distributors and Electron.
The product was delivered in phases using an MVP-first approach. Initial focus areas included responsive design, member authentication with SMS MFA, accessibility for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing members, and frictionless navigation between platforms. Importantly, we delivered it without a dedicated admin interface, instead leveraging existing tools and APIs to cut complexity and costs.
By 2023, all BAFTA Awards had successfully transitioned to BAFTA View, with platform engagement growing exponentially. Members went from watching fewer than 5 titles per year to an average of 34 by 2025. Studio integrations expanded to include Warner Bros, Disney, Sony, Vision Media, Vimeo, and others — unlocking smoother content delivery and tighter control over screeners.
BAFTA View not only modernised how awards content is accessed — it also reinforced BAFTA’s leadership in sustainable, secure digital delivery. The system’s focus on accessibility, configurability, and tight ecosystem integration means it continues to evolve, delivering long-term value to members, entrants, and the industry.
